Embarking on a Surgical Revolution 🚀 | Spine Surgery Transformed

Last December marked a milestone in my career and a leap forward in spine surgery techniques. I had the privilege of performing one of Australia’s first AI-assisted spinal surgeries, blending the precision of robotics with the intelligence of AI. 🤖💡

Together with the dedicated team at Warringal Private Hospital, we ventured into uncharted territory, leveraging this advanced technology to enhance the accuracy and outcomes of spine surgery.
Using my surgical plan, we used AI powered software to create custom spinal rods tailored to the patient’s unique anatomy, ensuring optimal fit and function with minimal adjustments needed during surgery.

What is the main advantage of robotic surgery? 🤖🦾

Many of my patients are curious about robotic surgery and often ask this question. It’s hard to name just one!

So I use this analogy to explain one of the key advantages…

Imagine you are planning a road trip, but you know there is going to be a lot of traffic ahead. Once upon a time, you might have used a paper street map to find your way. While trusty and reliable, you would not be able to get instant updates like the modern GPS on your phone is capable of.

You can think of robotic surgery in a similar way.

Surgeons take as many images as possible prior to surgery to plan the operative procedure. These images make for a trusty road map, but would not have been easily updated during surgery, say when the patient is positioned differently or once some spinal implants are in place.

Using these images, robotic surgery guidance systems can now track the position of instruments during spinal surgery to help guide the surgeon in real time. It can predict the depth needed for screws and other implants instantly.

Put simply, it gives surgeons more accurate and instant updates during the procedure just like GPS allows us to get instant updates about traffic conditions about the road ahead.

Orthopaedics Victoria is a team of surgeons who work together at Epworth Richmond and Epworth Eastern hospitals. They include Mr Martin D. Richardson, Mr David E. de la Harpe and Mr Andrew Gong. Each specialises in a different area of the orthopaedic field. These include knee, hip, shoulder and spine surgery.

Together with Keat they now have an even wider range of options to bring to the table for patients.

There will be no changes to our day to day operations and our valued allied health partners will remain the same. It is an exciting time for us all!

Radiculopathy is a condition that occurs when a nerve root in the spine is compressed or irritated, leading to pain, weakness, and/or numbness in the area of the body that the nerve serves.   It can be experienced in the arms, legs, feet or hands. Even across patches of skin on the body.

Sciatica, a common condition where pain and weakness can be felt down the leg is actually a type of radiculopathy.

➡️ Take a professional mindset and set up your home office properly.
➡️ Try to maintain good posture while sitting:
☑️ Keep your neck tall and your shoulders relaxed
☑️ Keep your screen at eye level
➡️ Sitting in the same place for too long can make your body stiff. Move about and stretch!
➡️ Sit stand desks are popular, but use them correctly. Improper standing technique can be as bad as sitting for long periods. (see posture tips.)

Sadly all good things must come to an end as we say goodbye to our lovely Lily who has just finished working with us as part of our administrative team.

But for Lily there are new beginnings as she has graduated from her Medical Degree and will commence her internship at a major public hospital next year.
We wish her all the best with her medical career, she has a very bright future ahead of her!

Lily, it has been an absolute pleasure having you journey with us for the last 2 years.
We will miss you dearly!

What part of the spine is that?
In medical settings you may hear technical terms used to describe specific areas of the spine.
When doctors talk about the spine, they are actually referring to the 24 bones of the vertebral column. Each vertebrae is associated with a designated number (but we won't go in to that now!)
Broader still, the spine is divided into roughly 6 different segments.
These include the:

➡️ Cervical Spine
➡️ Thoracic Spine
➡️ Lumbar Spine
➡️ Sacrum
➡️ Coccyx

You’ve probably all heard the term, but what exactly is a spinal “disc”?
Well here is a brief explanation:

➡️ Discs, or more specifically intervertebral discs, are the soft pads positioned in between each of the vertebrae of the spine.
➡️ Think of them as the shock absorbers of the spine.
➡️ They are tough, durable and flexible.
➡️ Intervertebral discs are what allow us to have a nice bendy back! 🙂

Today is Harmony Day (which leads in to Harmony Week 21-27 March). In Australia Harmony Day coincides with the United Nations’ International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.

It is a day where we celebrate all of the different cultures and races that make Australia the great country that it is!

Did you know:

➡️ Almost half of Australians were either born overseas or have a parent who was.

➡️ More than 7.5 million people have migrated to Australia since 1945.

While growing up Keat discovered a passion for medicine. He came to Australia for tertiary education at the University of Melbourne where he later received his medical degree. Keat went on to gain surgical training and received fellowships at Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Australian Orthopaedic Association.

Subsequently, his two younger brothers joined him and were also educated here.

His parents also moved here approximately 6 years ago. They all now call Australia home.
